As a result of stricter work place risk assessment criteria, the UK has a fast growing health and safety industry with over 1500 specialist firms selling health and safety services to other companies so that all legal requirements are met.

However, health and safety is not only a concern within the work environment, but is relevant to any particular situation where a company or individual is responsible for the welfare of some-one in their care. This applies to schools, group activities or even within a familial environment.

Careers prospects

There are many career prospects for those who have a qualification in health and safety adviser. With an average starting salary of £18,000 - £25,000 in the UK, those in this particular role will be expected to liaise with a number of companies to advise with expert knowledge and to promote positive health and safety environment and ensuring that all health and safety logistics are adhered to.

However, there are also many other roles available to those with health and safety qualifications such as a trading standards officer, ensuring consumer goods and services meet certain legal standards or as an environmental health practitioner.

Similarly, those with health and safety qualifications may also be suited to roles within the social care sectors identifying potential health and safety risks and concerns within housing facilities, waste management and pollution levels.

Studying Health and Safety

There are a number of health and safety courses available to those wishing to pursue this avenue of study. The most popular or courses of study in this particular field are the continuing professional development courses that are useful for those currently in careers such as teaching and humans resources roles.

However, there are a number of courses available at both undergraduate and post-graduate level that allow students to gain experience within the health and safety industry. An undergraduate course will last for a minimum of 3 years and candidate applying for this particular course of study will be expected to have a minimum of 3 A-levels in a related field.

Post-graduate qualifications will last a minimum of a year, although those studying on a part time basis will have to study for a longer period of time. Those wishing to pursue this course of study should have a 2:1 degree and/or relevant work experience.

If you’re not a native English speaker, then don’t worry! A university will still consider your application. However, you will be expected to score a minimum of 6.0 -6.5.

Where to study

Of course it is vital that you choose somewhere that will make you happy for the duration of your course, particularly if you’re opting to live away from home. Your qualification will end up costing you a lot of money, wherever you study. It is important get the most out of your time as a student both emotionally as well as intellectually. As such it is important that you consider whether the surrounding culture will add to the pleasure of your University years as well as academic benefits of studying at a particular institution.

It is also important that you budget accordingly to your programme of study. Will you need to work while you study? Can you see any part-time job opportunities in the locality? Are you eligible for any grants or scholarships to partially fund your course?

When you are applying to study on a general health course, it is important not only to look at the module options available to you, but also the practical hands-on experience that you will gain with your course. In order to provide students with the best training possible, many establishments will forge relationships with local healthcare providers that will not only allow students  to gain hands on experience within the sector, but will also allow for a diverse range of career opportunities.

Most Universities will only accept graduates with 3 A-levels for under-graduate courses, or with a 2:1 degree for post-graduate study. Before deciding that general health is the course for you, check that your predicted grades meet these requirements.
